<International Circulation>: I am with Prof Allen. Prof Allen, some studies show that admission to the hospital for heart failure will recur with a 30 to 50 % mortality rate in the next year. What is the major reason for that outcome?

Prof Allen : We know that worsening symptoms and worsening functional status among patients with heart failure is one of the strongest predictors of how patients are doing. If patients become so sick that they need to be in the hospital, that is typically a sign that their disease has progressed. So, if I think it is an important milestone or a marker that patients have progressed -- that they are at high risk for death -- and that they probably deserve more attention, more aggressive care, and consideration for a fundamental change in their therapy.
